Dear Madam Lee, I own a pub which also has live music and private functions. On the walls in the lounge/private function room I already have two large pictures of a Dragon and a Tiger and would also like to have something painted on the wall in the public bar.  What do you think of the images I already have and what other images or symbols can you suggest? – Mr.& Mrs. S  from Geelong

In Feng Shui the terms ‘Dragon’ and ‘Tiger’ are most commonly used to describe energies associated with land form and are not meant to be taken literally. I am often amazed with a lot of images being used today, but not at all surprised when sometimes people describe problems they are having which relate to the pictures they have on display.

For example, many years ago I had a client who was concerned about her 5 year old son who was always crying in his bedroom. On the wall of his room hung a picture of a young boy crying and once this was removed he was fine. Anyone in advertising knows how effective strong images can be, as well as characters in movies and bands.
Therefore please consider the type of clientele you would like to attract and display images that they can relate to positively. For example the Tiger actually belongs outside as it is a fierce and wild animal and to invite the Tiger inside usually means arguments, which is not desirable in a hotel.
In addition, whilst the Dragon is a symbol of power and excellence and is said to bring prosperity, abundance and fortune, its image is often quite ferocious.  As such you must take this into consideration and select a representation that is more benevolent, as otherwise it may also increase feelings of aggression amongst your patrons.
Other more positive and harmonious symbols that you may wish to consider using are:
  • The Lotus
  • The Mystical Knot
  • A Pair of Golden Fishes
