Jerry King received private BaZi (八字) Four Pillars of Destiny and I Ching training from Dr. Lily Chung in San Francisco, a world renowned expert in Eastern Metaphysics, specializing in Four Pillars and the I Ching. He has also studied Feng Shui and Four Pillars under various masters in Taiwan and Hong Kong. Jerry specializes in Purple Star Astrology (紫微斗數) readings and travels extensively, consulting globally and obtaining research data and verifying theories of cosmic flow in the Four Pillars of Destiny. In this article he gives us a preview of his new book Four Pillars of Destiny: A Guide to Relationships

Cultivating good relationships with people around you can bring about happiness and harmony. Most often, we find ourselves in a bind when it comes to relationships. Trying to iron out differences between you and your partner can be difficult at times. Throughout my Feng Shui consultations, one of the primary concerns from my clients is often related to relationships. A number of questions related to marriage, compatibility and suitable partners always come to the forefront. In 2011, relationship issues are much more pertinent due to the cosmic energy of the Yin Metal Rabbit. Coincidentally, the annual 7 star representing young females is one of the key themes for the year. Many affairs were unearthed and troubles came from young females in 2011 more than any year in the past decade.

Due to the countless number of relationship issues that I have encountered over the years in my consultations, I decided to embark upon putting together a book on Four Pillars of Destiny related to relationships. It is a first of its kind in English which includes real-life case studies. Birth charts of individuals from all walks of life and locales are explored, including those in the public eye – business innovators, celebrity artists, and political leaders – with verifiable life stories.

For this article, I would like to briefly elaborate on the Romance Star. In Four Pillars practice, the Rat, Rabbit, Horse and Rooster are considered to be the Romance Star. There is a specific pattern which identifies the true Romance Star of a birth chart. Below is the table detailing the Romance Star pertaining to the specific birth year.

Birth Year AnimalRomance Star
Monkey (申), Dragon (辰), Rat (子)Rooster (酉)
Tiger (寅), Dog (戌), Horse (午)Rabbit (卯)
Pig (亥), Goat (未), Rabbit (卯)Rat (子)
Snake (巳), Ox (丑), Rooster (酉)Horse (午)

There are many misconceptions about the Romance Star that requires further explanation. Some people have asked me why they don’t have any romance even though they have one or more Romance Star in their birth chart. Special Stars or ‘shen sha’, even though they are incorporated into a Four Pillars reading, are secondary to the identification of the ‘Useful God.’ A chart may have the Nobleman, Guard, Guide, Romance, and many other auspicious stars, but what good is it if those specific stars have elements that are unfavourable to the flow of the birth system?

With the Romance Star, its relation to the self element can tell us many things about a person. For example, a Yang Metal self having the Horse as the Romance Star can be very auspicious for a woman if fire is favourable to the birth chart. A Yang Metal self for a male’s chart may prefer the Rabbit as his Romance Star, but again, the key is to ensure that the Rabbit is favourable to his chart.

Romance is not always guaranteed even if you were to have a Romance Star in the birth chart. The elemental interaction between the self element and the Romance Star can tell us a lot in terms of whether it is true romance or a ‘fly-by’ lover. I have often encountered in my consultations where women having the Romance Star as the output element tend to run into trouble when it comes to relationships.

Their love is often based on emotions; the longer the relationship goes, the more demanding they become. Their demands often place an immense amount of pressure on the partner that they are with. In the end, their relationship falls apart. The topic of the Romance Star can cover an entire chapter of a book. Its position or location in the Four Pillars chart, its relationship to the self element, and the combinations involved, are just some of the factors that must be considered prior to interpreting the effects of the Romance Star.

One of the greatest difficulties in presenting the Four Pillars theories and methodologies in a book is trying to explain how cosmic flow is determined. The subject of Four Pillars has been practiced for centuries yet its methodologies are constantly under debate. Many masters have differing opinions about the methods used. The key to Four Pillars is to understand the flow then verifying the chart using historical data. It is not enough to just label a chart requiring the use of a specific element and walk away from a consultation without testing. This is an irresponsible way of approaching a consultation which can lead to detrimental results.

My goal is to present Four Pillars in such a way that is entertaining for my readers while ensuring that the original theories and methodologies are explained according to the original texts from the classics. It is difficult to encapsulate all the techniques within one book as Four Pillars is a subject that requires endless study. After all, we are dealing with real human beings. This is only my first amongst many books that I will be releasing on the topics of Four Pillars and Feng Shui. There may be holes and controversies found within my book; those holes will be covered in my future writings. My second book will explore the potential that one may hold based upon the blueprint of one’s Four Pillars birth chart. Parts of the Chinese classics will also be explored in my next book. Like many who practice Four Pillars of Destiny, our research is never-ending which makes understanding life fun and fascinating.
